One of my goals for the year is to check out more foreign films. I’ve long been a fan of French, Spanish and Italian offerings, and now I’m turning my attention towards India (Bollywood actresses.. meow). A new film called “Anuranan” has caught my eye, and sounds like an interesting look at two transplanted Indian couples living in London.

on of the themes in the movie are quite poetic in their own right:

Can all relations be defined? Definitions tend to limit relationships where subtlety gets lost in a hidden maze of claustrophobic phrases. Emotions, like lyrics, need to be felt and not forced into contexts of abstract experiences. They need to simmer in the mind or at least have a burnt-out effect and resonate long after the palpable experience of being in a relationship no longer there.

Two couples - Rahul (Rahul Bose) and Nandita (Rituparna Sengupta), Preeti (Raima Sen) and Amit (Rajat Kapoor) - walk into each other’s lives and resonate at emotional frequencies that can neither be defined nor measured in terms of social parameters.

There is also a hilarious jab at one of the actresses by the writer of the piece that would leave western readers aghast:

Just check out her expression when she hugs Rahul’s sweater while the dictaphone replays his recorded voice. But wish the cinematographer hadn’t taken those closeups of the pretty face, considering that Rituparna still hasn’t got a nosejob done.

Anuranan is playing now, and hopefully coming to a Netflix filled mailbox near you soon.
